Bhubaneswar, 24 April 2025 — Odisha’s ecologically rich and diverse region Similipal has finally received the long-awaited recognition. The state government, through a notification issued on 24 April 2025, has officially declared Similipal as a National Park. With this historic announcement, Similipal becomes India’s 107th National Park and the second National Park in Odisha after Bhitarkanika.
Similipal: A Land of Ecological Marvels
Similipal, named after the “Simul” (Red Silk Cotton) trees, is located in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. For a long time, the area has been protected as a Tiger Reserve, Biosphere Reserve, and Wildlife Sanctuary. But now, it has achieved a new prestigious status — National Park.
Spanning over 2750 square kilometers, Similipal is home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. It shelters iconic wildlife species like the Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, and Indian Gaur, and is densely forested with trees like Sal, Siali, and Mahua.
The Historic Decision to Grant National Park Status
The notification issued by the Odisha Government states, “Considering Similipal’s ecological significance, rich wildlife diversity, and indigenous cultural heritage, it has been granted the status of a National Park.”
This decision is not only a major step toward environmental conservation but also a move to elevate Odisha’s natural treasures to global prominence.
What Will Change with the New National Park Status?
Stronger Legal Protection:
As a National Park, Similipal will enjoy stricter environmental protections. Activities like hunting, tree cutting, and industrial ventures will be completely prohibited.
Boost to Tourism and Research:
The area is set to become a major hub for eco-tourism and wildlife research. Enhanced tourist facilities will also boost local employment opportunities.
Sustainable Development for Indigenous Communities:
Several tribal communities such as the Ho, Santal, and Bhil reside within Similipal. The National Park status is expected to bring improved sustainable livelihood, education, and healthcare opportunities for them.
A Paradise for Wildlife
Major species found in Similipal include:
Bengal Tiger – the pride of its Tiger Reserve.
Indian Elephant – present in large numbers.
Indian Gaur (Wild Buffalo)
Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, and Barasingha
Rare bird species like Hornbills and Grey-headed Eagles.
A Unique Hub of Biodiversity and Ecosystems
Similipal houses more than 1000 plant species, over 60 species of mammals, 300+ bird species, and countless insects and reptiles. It remains one of India’s few untouched ecosystems where nature thrives in its rawest form.
National and Global Importance
Similipal has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2009. Now, with the National Park designation, its international stature is set to rise further.
Experts from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) believe this move will be a milestone for biodiversity conservation. International environmental organizations have also welcomed this decision warmly.
Reactions from Leaders and Experts
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on this occasion,
“Similipal becoming a National Park is a moment of pride for Odisha. It reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting our natural resources and wildlife.”
Environmentalist Sunil Mishra remarked,
“This is a historic moment. It will not only ensure better protection for biodiversity but also position Odisha as a key eco-tourism destination.”
A New Gateway for Tourism
With its new status, Similipal is poised to become a major attraction for tourists. Visitors will have opportunities for close-up wildlife experiences, provided they adhere to strict environmental guidelines designed to maintain ecological balance.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Solutions
While the news is cause for celebration, it also presents several challenges:
Relocation and sustainable development of local communities
Strict surveillance against poaching and illegal logging
Environmental discipline in tourism management
The government has announced plans to form a dedicated Special Management Committee to address these aspects effectively.
